SCULPTURE ARRIVES IN ADDISON
Addison
Point Park
received its final piece on October 6 when the sculpture created at this year’s
International Schoodic Sculpture Symposium was installed. The sculpture was
created by Lise Becu and aptly named “The Spirit of the Marsh.”

ADDISON
TURBINE TAKES FLIGHT
After months of investigation and negotiation, Bergey
Windpower honored their warranty and on September 23, replaced the Addison wind turbine that came down in a storm last
December.
The investigation revealed that the collapse
was caused by numerous installation errors. Even though the warranty does not
cover installation problems the company stood up to the plate and hit a home run
by replacing the turbine at no cost to the town. Bergey saved the town of Addison the huge expense of
a lawsuit against the installer, Evolo Energy Solutions.
Not only did they honor the warranty but they
went the extra mile and sent their company expert from
Oklahoma
to install it, since there are very few installers in Maine.
So many people stopped by while the
installation was taking place to say how much they have missed driving by and
seeing the turbine turning. I totally agree and I’m so happy to see that bright
yellow cap towering over the trees again.
DIKE BRIDGE UPDATE
In June of 2010, the town was notified that the replacement
of the Ridge Road
dike bridge was too large and too expensive for the Maine Department of
Transportation (MEDOT) and that they would team up with the United States Army
of Corps of Engineers (USACE) to move forward with the project.
For the last year the town has received several
updates that all reference the negotiations between the two parties as they
worked out the details of their contract.
The new update from USACE states that the
contract has been signed between the two agencies. USACE will conduct a
feasibility study for environmental restoration that will include cost analysis,
measured impacts on wells, residential and agricultural properties. The study
will consider any bridge configuration that appears to fit the project and will
take approximately one year to complete. When concluded, USACE will provide a
recommendation to MEDOT. If they agree on the recommendation, USACE will manage
the project and provide sixty five percent of the funding. MEDOT will be their
partner and provide the other thirty five percent.
The original start date projected by MEDOT of
2012 doesn’t seem realistic if this is the pace at which this project is going
to move. The town’s most important concern is that the bridge is deteriorating.
If it reaches a certain stage the MEDOT, at several public meetings, has
indicated that the bridge may have to be closed until it can be repaired. That
is a major inconvenience for many residents, especially fire fighters living on
that side of town. Reaching the fire station is a very time sensitive issue and
without the bridge, response time will be much longer.
BOARD OF APPEALS MEET
At their August meeting, the planning board denied an
application from Chris Burke to add a small living space to the Eastern Harbor
Lobster Sales building at 415
Mooseneck Road. The application was unanimously
denied because this application proposes to have a residential use in the
commercial fisheries/marine activities zone. Burke requested that the board of
appeals review the decision.
The appeals board met on August 25 and Burke
made his case. He explained that others have resided in the building and that
living on the premises would allow him to run the business more efficiently. It
would decrease theft, share costs, as well as provide a convenience to his
customers. He told the board that he is looking for a variance or exception to
the rule.
The board passed a motion that Chris Burke be
granted as a waiver to the Addison Shoreland Zoning Ordinance because the
structure in question has been used as a residence in the past and the proposed
use of the structure constitutes a home occupied business which is allowed by
the Addison Shoreland Zoning Ordinance.
The planning board acted appropriately when
denying the permit. Only the board of appeals can make a waiver to the zoning
ordinance for a change of use.
OLD PICTURES OF CHURCH
ON THE HILL NEEDED
The Friends of the Church on the Hill are looking for anyone
who may have old photos of the building. The group is working on restoring the
structure but they need a picture of what the building looked liked originally.
If you have such a photo or any information contact Muriel
Grant, P.O. Box 52,
Addison, 04606 or call Cathy Fonda, 483-4655.

Have you ever touched the vent
of an extinct volcano? On June 7, the first grade students from DW Merritt
Elementary School did and here is the picture to prove it. Accompanied by their
teacher Gale Whitten and adult helpers, Dianne Farren and Pat Thaxter, the
students took a field trip to the Town Beach in
South Addison. The volcano is located on the
Shore Path Trail and fairly easy to find. The top of the volcano was scuffed off
by the glacier about 13,000 years ago but its evidence is still there, along
with its rhyoite and pillow lava.
